If unauthorized persons enter a building or individual rooms, this can lead to various other dangers. These include, for example, theft or manipulation of information or IT systems. In qualified attacks, the duration during which the attackers can pursue their goal undisturbed is decisive.
Often, attackers want to steal valuable IT components or other goods that can be easily disposed of. However, the goal of a break-in can also be, among other things, to obtain confidential information, carry out manipulations, or disrupt business processes.
Through unauthorized entry into premises, several types of damage can thus occur:
- Unauthorized entry alone can cause property damage. Windows and doors are forced open and damaged in the process, they must be repaired or replaced.
- Stolen, damaged, or destroyed equipment or components must be repaired or replaced.
- Damage can occur through violation of the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of information or applications.
Examples:
- Vandalism
- During a break-in at a company on a weekend, only minor damage was caused by forcing open a window, and only a petty cash box and minor fixtures were stolen. However, during a routine inspection, it was later discovered that a central server was skillfully manipulated at exactly the time of the break-in.
